The Suit Makes the Man

As a professional image consultant I always advise my male clients to be sure to dress to accentuate their attributes and downplay any challenging areas. A lot of men have the impression that dressing for your body type only applies to women – but that’s not true.

Here are my answers to some recently asked questions that will help any top level professional dress more powerfully for his particular body type while following the perplexing button rule:

Suit-Up with Power and Strong, Silent Messages
Many men in high-powered positions or aspiring mid-level executives who want to get promoted to the C-suite need to understand the power messages of the suit. Whether you are interviewing for a senior level position or attending an evening philanthropic event, chances are you need to be wearing a suit that commands authority. The suit is considered the professional corporate uniform, but today every man needs a suit from time to time – to attend an evening event, a wedding, a funeral, or to make an appearance in court. But regardless of where or why you put on a suit, the key silent messages that the suit conveys are power, sophistication, and elegance.

A Suit Style for Every Man’s Physique
Every body type has its challenges and that is true for men, just as it is for women. There are tall men, short men, slender men, and heavy men. But if you dress correctly for your current body architecture you can use the illusion of correctly chosen clothing to look handsome and commanding. If you work with an image consultant, we will show you how to utilize the lines of suit design details to make you appear taller, thinner, or even heavier – if you happen to be a tall, slender fellow who needs to add some visual pounds.

Below I have listed all styles of men’s suits – and I’ve also included the double-breasted style, because it is a high fashion suit that goes in and out of fashion from time to time. So here are the highlights of the recommended styles of suits that work well with different kinds of body types:

The Heavy Man

Goal: With this body type, you want to create an illusion of appearing taller and thinner.

This man will want to wear vertical lines that draw the eye up and down his silhouette, but also attract the eye away from the waist area. The best suits for this body type are single-breasted, 2-button styles with a medium V stance. They provide slimming lines by creating a longer V in the upper chest section.

Avoid: 3-button coats or jackets with short, rolled collars. They make you look shorter and heavier.

The Slender Man

Goal: The slender man needs to increase breadth across his shoulder and chest area to add some weight on his narrow frame.

This physique will look best in single-breasted 2-button jackets. If you are on the shorter side, a 3-button jacket can give you some vertical lines to make you appear taller. You can also wear a double-breasted suit with lapels that roll below the waist to elongate your torso and give you some added fabric across the midsection.

Avoid: Pinstripe suits that can make you appear too thin.

The Tall Man

Goal: If you are over 6 feet tall you already have a tall, vertical frame, which means you can add some horizontal lines.

The man with this body type is very fortunate, because he can wear all styles of suits, but he will definitely need to wear a longer cut of jacket. You will look great in a 3-button single-breasted style jacket. A double-breasted coat works on the tall man, too, because he can look good with the horizontal lines of the buttons and front opening.

The Athletic Man

Goal: With your exaggerated V-shaped frame, you have the desired ideal shape. Your shoulders are broad but your waist is slim, creating an inverted triangle.

With this athletic build you will look best in single-breasted 2-button styles that will deemphasize a bit of your shoulder width. You may also need to look for “athletic cut” suits that provide a larger drop, which is the difference between your chest measurement and your waist size.

What’s the button-rule?

There is a rule to buttoning a man’s coat in order to project sophistication and elegance. But it is amazing to me to see sportscasters, TV reporters, and celebrities who don’t follow this rule because not doing so can sabotage their image immediately.

Here is a quick history of how the button rule came into existence:

Back years ago King Edward VII became so heavy that he was unable to button the bottom button of his vest. His followers did not want to embarrass him by buttoning their last button, so they began to take his lead and imitate his style – and that started a new fashion trend to leave the last button open. Today suits are designed to leave the bottom button open, and so are vests and sport coats. Here is a quick reference guide to when to button which button of your jacket:

  • On a single-breasted 2-button jacket – button the top button only.
  • On a single-breasted 3-button jacket – button the top two buttons only, unless the suit lapels tend to roll to the middle button. In that case you would not button the top button because of how the lapel would lay against your torso.
  • A trendy, single-breasted 4-button jacket is often designed so that you wear all buttons closed or only the bottom button open. I always encourage my clients to button the last button unless they see a pull in the fabric around the 4th button. In that case you would leave it unbuttoned.

Here’s the button bottom line: Most jackets are designed to leave the bottom button undone. So if you button it then the fabric pulls and shows if you have a few extra pounds, which can undermine your great presence. We realize that when men gain weight, you tend to put the pounds in your lower midsection. So coats are made so that you have some ease for the coat to lay straight with no pulling or tugging – as long as you don’t use that bottom or last button.

I hope that regardless of your physique or title, you will find the right suit that fits you correctly and can emphasize your positive features. When you know the rules of buttoning the coat, it appears that you are a sharp, well-dressed man who understands how to get the most from his wardrobe.

Every man needs at least one modern suit in his wardrobe to wear when the situation calls for a formal, sophisticated look. So next time you shop for suit, remember the importance that lines make in helping you create an illusion to appear more powerful, commanding, and elegant.

Manly Glasses Are Less Fashionable

Gender is another widely used criterion to categorize eye wear, in addition to color, shapes, materials, and so on. By and large, manly glasses, feminine glasses and unisex glasses are the three main forms of eye wear and each of them are specially designed for glasses users of certain groups. For example, the manly eye wear are specially made for man, feminine glasses for women and unisex series are suitable for both. It seems, however, that the manly eyeglasses are never the focus of the manufacturers and the public, for only few elements can well fit the demands of male wearers. That sounds reasonable, but incorrect. In fact, like women, men also pay a lot of attention to what they wear and dress, but this can not be easily detected by others. This is because men are more reserved than women and are not willingly to tell what they really want and need in most cases. In this sense, manly eyeglasses should be made in styles and designs that can fit male wearer’s demands.

Usually, male eye wear are specifically made for male wearers of two major groups, namely the mature and the young.

It is true that most mature men tend to select manly glasses in simple designs and fewer colors. For example, some of the most popular series, especially those classic series, are designed in very simple styles; and some of the commonest colors are black, white, tortoise shell, brown gunmetal, etc. This may give women an impression that men do not care much about fashion. This is not true. While selecting, men tend to pay more attention to whether or not the glasses are suitable for their face shapes and skin colors; the glasses are designed in natural cut line and can give them some sort of elegance; the glasses are made from the finest materials that they desire for, especially for particular purposes; or in more cases, the glasses can work perfectly or not. In a word, mature men tend to pay more attention to the function of the eye wear and the making process, and so on- this can well explain their glamour of mature and elegance.

Like women wearers, young men are some of the most fashion-oriented people. Not only the colors, but the designs all are their considerations while selecting eyeglasses. Some of the most eye-catching colors, like pink, red, blue, green, etc, are also loved by young guys; the designs of their eye wear are trendy in the latest fashion trend. The reasons are very simple- these guys are so vigorous and creative that they require highly of what they wear (fashion and unique); these people tend to show their personal elegance and glamour by wearing specially designed glasses, so as to attract more girls. Therefore, these manly glasses are much more stylish and unique than those worn by mature men.

Fashionable T-Shirts For Men

Many men have the idea that fashionable t-shirts are very fancy and very expensive. The reality is that a man can be dressed casually and still look fashionable without breaking the bank.

Fashion for men is often a complex idea for many people, they immediately think it must be high end and rather fancy. Much like the women’s fashion world, men can have a whole variety of fashion that does not to be so fancy or expensive. You don’t need to wear an expensive t-shirt from a clothing line such as Gucci in order to be considered fashionable. T-shirts can be very casual yet trendy at the same time. Not only that, but there is no need to break the bank either especially now that there are so many great lines out there.

Fashion is used to help make a man look great and t-shirts are always a wonderful option for any wardrobe. The idea that only the fancier button down t-shirts are fashionable are far outdated: you can wear a more casual tee with a nice graphic or design on it and still look excellent. It has actually become more trendy in recent times to wear a more casual graphic tee for men rather than the button down; it makes men look friendlier and not so serious all the time.

The t-shirts do not need to be expensive either. There are many lines of men’s apparel which are priced at rates anyone can afford. Usually casual tee companies will only charge at maximum $30, while some major brands only sell shirts at that price if they are on sale. Fashionable shirts for men should be affordable to any man who wants to look good. After all…we are no longer in the time when fashion was meant solely for the elites of society.

Mens Fashion Tips

While it is a common notion that it is easier for a man to get dressed than it is for a woman, many men still commit classic mistakes in choosing proper clubwear when they go out to party. More often than not, men who look funny and/or ridiculous are hardly aware of it and to be honest, it is best to get an opinion from a woman.

Here are some fashion tips that will help guide you in your wardrobe selection for that next hot night out! Well, here’s the news, there are real and existing rules that apply to men when it comes to choosing the right clubwear to wear. Even if you are a fashion expert, I am certain you may be surprised by what I feel are the do’s and don’ts to follow when selecting appropriate partying attire.

1) Never Overdress

In general, men should never go to a club overdressed except in the rare occasion that you are coming straight from work but then that’s another problem to deal with. Remember this point, a club is a place for partying and neither formal nor business attire has a place here. Barney from the popular T.V. show “How I Met Your Mother” may make it seem that suits are cool to wear all the time including when you go out, but this works only in certain clubs, and those are the ones the really cool people are not in. Wearing a tie is acceptable only if it is a tie that is absolutely appropriate otherwise, it is never advisable to show up to a club in one. In my opinion it is still best to reserve the tie for work.

2) Men Should Never Wear Sunglasses In A Club

You may see rockstars and celebrities wearing sunglasses at night so you may think it is OK for you to do the same. Some celebrities may have a point when they state that they use them due to the many flashes from all the paparazzi but more than likely they are hiding the bags under their eyes from staying up too late. Although a pair of cool sunglasses may look good on you outside on a sunny day, they absolutely should never be worn in a club. The sun does not shine inside a club, and wearing shades while clubbing is absolutely not cool no matter what you think.

3) Men Should Never Wear Slacks And Should Always Wear Jeans

Despite what you may have heard, clubs don’t discriminate on age, but they are always only for the young at heart. Slacks can easily make a man look old regardless of how good they look on him. When going to a club, it is always best to stick to jeans. This rule, however, is to mean only straight cut, blue or dark-colored denims. White-washed jeans can make a man look short, and colored jeans tend to look loud and detestable. Skinny jeans on men, especially the really tight ones that some men are wearing lately on the other hand, died with the king so once and for all, say goodbye to them.

4) Always Wear The Appropriate Shoes

Regardless of color, rubber shoes and sneakers are always inappropriate clubwear. When going clubbing, a better footwear choice is either a pair of dress shoes or loafers. Sandals are great for the beach, but the club is not a beach and using socks will not improve the look. A man who can remember where he is will never commit the mistake of being a fashion nightmare, and remember women pay attention to shoes on a man regardless of what they say.

5) The Right Shirt

Most clubs will not allow t-shirts even if it cost you three or four hundred dollars. It is common knowledge that most hip clubs require their patrons to wear collared shirts before even considering allowing them in. If you insist on using one, when going to a club in a t-shirt, always remember to match it up with a sport coat or jacket. This easy look is great for all types of men regardless of height or build. A simple button-down shirt with sleeves rolled up just right below the elbow will always be a winner, though. This simple, classic look works for all ages at all times. It never gets outdated and will never be a mistake. A glittering shirt, however, should be worn only in the circus. Unless you form part of the lighting ensemble for the nightclub, your glittered shirt has no place there.
